CAIRNS, S.D., 1989:10:30. Discriminant analysis of Indo-West Pacific Flabellum. Mem. Ass. Australas. Palaeontols 8, 61-68. ISSN 0810-8889. Stepwise discriminant analysis was performed on 145 specimens of Indo-West Pacific Flabellum pertaining to 8 putative species. Posterior classification supported the premise of 8 species at the 99.3% level. Only two characters are needed to distinguish all species at the 0.01 level: lesser calicular diameter and crest height. Among the first 3 canonical variables, which explain most (95.7"7o) of the variation, 6 characters proved to be most highly weighted: edge angle, crest height, lateral edge length, lesser calicular diameter, greater calicular diameter, and height. Subsequent inclusion of type specimens into the classification revealed that the 5 syntypes of F. patens are all different species; the 5 syntypes of F. pavoninum represent 2 species, one of which is F. dislinclum; F. magnificum, F. lamellulosum, and F. vaughani are all distinct species; the east African species is poorly known and difficult to distinguish; and 2 unnamed species remain. Discriminant analysis is highly recommended as a statistical procedure to distinguish species that have few qualitative differences, and to subsequently identify specimens, or assign types, following a preliminary analysis that does not include the type specimens. Intraspecific phylogeography of the Japanese threadfin bream, Nemipterus japonicus (Perciformes: Nemipteridae), from the Persian Gulf and Indo-West Pacific: a preliminary study based on mitochondrial DNA sequence

The Japanese threadfin bream, Nemipterus japonicus, the most abundant and crucially economic Nemipterus species is widespread throughout the Indo-West Pacific. The species has been studied widely for various aspects but genetic studies are scanty. This preliminary study contributes to the species phylogeography through the study of the genetic diversity and historical demography of N. japonicus...

Genetic Population Structure of the Coral Reef Sea Star Linckia laevigata in the Western Indian Ocean and Indo-West Pacific

The coral reef sea star Linckia laevigata is common on shallow water coral reefs of the Indo-West Pacific. Its large geographic distribution and comprehensive data from previous studies makes it suitable to examine genetic differentiation and connectivity over large geographical scales. Based on partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene this study investigates the g...

Diversity of Indo-West Pacific Siphonaria (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Euthyneura).

Species of the limpet genus Siphonaria (Gastropoda: Euthyneura) are commonly found in the rocky intertidal, worldwide, except in the Arctic. In total, 205 species-group names are available and not permanently invalid. However, estimating the actual species diversity of Siphonaria has remained challenging, mainly because past authors have interpreted differently the variation of shell characters...

Mitochondrial DNA sequence-based phylogenetic relationship of Trichiurus lepturus (Perciformes: Trichiuridae) from the Persian Gulf

In this study, mitochondrial DNA analysis using 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) was performed to investigate the phylogeny relationship of Trichiurus lepturus in the Persian Gulf compared to the other investigated area. The amplification of 16S rDNA resulted in a product of 600 bp in all samples. The results showed that the isolated strain belongs to T. lepturus showing 42 divergence sites among the s...
